Somalia: PM pays tribute to genocide victims in Rwanda

Date:

The Prime Minister of Somalia Hassan Ali Kheyre on a two-day official visit to Rwanda , on Tuesday toured the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

The Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, and through education and peace-building honours the memory of more than one million Rwandans killed in 1994.

The Somali PM has paid a visit to Rwanda as part of the Rwandan government’s outreach efforts to engage with regional countries.

In late November 2017, Rwanda sent medical relief worth US$2 million to Somalia following the terror attack in Somalia’s capital city Mogadishu which left over 300 people dead.

The visit also comes after Somalia’s application to join the East African Community was rejected in March 2016; a regional bloc to which belong six members states including Rwanda, after failing to meet the eligibility criteria.
