A senior UCID party official held a press conference on Saturday accusing Waddani’s Presidential Candidate, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, of committing treason during a recent trip to Turkey.
Yusuf Kayse Abdullahi, UCID’s Information Secretary, says his party has proof that Irro traveled to Turkey to seek funding for his Presidential campaign.
“Our party has proof that Irro traveled to Turkey to participate in talks with the Government of Somalia,” Abdullahi said.
“He met with senior Somalia and Turkish officials and asked them to fund his Presidential Campaign,” Abdullahi said.
Abdullahi says Irro told his colleagues that he was going to Finland for a medical checkup.
“Many of his colleagues had no idea he was in Turkey. He told his colleagues that he was going to Finland for a medical checkup,” Abdullahi said.
Abdullahi says this his party received a tip on Irro’s secret meetings from Somalilanders living in Turkey
“Many Somalilanders in Turkey saw Irro in the country and informed us about the secret meetings,” Abdullahi said.
According to Somaliland’s constitution, no party is allowed to receive funding from a foreign country, nor is any politician allowed to have secret meetings with government officials from Somalia.
Irro returned to Somaliland last week, and is currently in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, performing the holy Umrah pilgrimage.
