Somaliland: UCID Implodes, VP Hopeful quits, Presidential Ticket for Sale – By Ahmed Kheyre

Date:

Recently, I wrote an article highlighting the potential of Jamal Ali Hussein and Abdirashid Hassan Matan from UCID with regard to the future political leadership of Somaliland. Today, one has resigned and left the party and the other is more likely to be maneuvered out by a coterie of powerful, rich and influential ex-ministers from the administration of President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud “Silanyo”.

In his resignation statement, Abdirashid Hassan Matan pointed the finger at UCID’s honorary chair and unsuccessful multiple presidential candidate, Faisal Ali Warabe, of contriving to sell the party to the highest bidder.

Former presumptive Vice-Presidential candidate, Abdirashid Hassan Matan also revealed a disagreement between himself and presumptive presidential candidate Jamal Ali Hussien with regard to the party’s political direction.

In response to the accusation laid against him, political survivor, Faisal Ali Warabe retorted that “One does not become a politician on Facebook and internet chat rooms, and all candidates must be evaluated”.

I would like to point out, in case it has slipped his mind, the people of Somaliland “evaluated” Faisal Ali Warabe, twice and on both occasions found him lacking the calibre to lead the nation. It may sound harsh and cruel, but, it is the truth, and we all know it.

It was too much to hope that Faisal would don the mantle of an elder statesman and let the next generation of Somaliland take its rightful place.

Faisal Ali Warabe is not a politician, he is a political opportunist, and anyone who made a deal with him, should have known that is not worth the paper it was written on.

With regard to Jamal’s tenuous position, in a recent forum televised on Horn Cable, he was asked whether, Faisal Ali Warabe was trying to sell his position to the former disgruntled ex-Kulmiye, ex- Silaanyo ministers.

Jamal flatly rejected the innuendo. Well, perhaps, when he is on the outside looking in, he may reconsider.

If Jamal Ali Hussein manages to get himself tossed of the UCID ticket, then sadly, he is not fit to lead the nation.

All in all, with Kulmiye in tatters and led by a former soldier, with UCID selling its integrity to the highest bidder, perhaps Somaliland’s only hope is Waddani. But, for the life of me, I cannot get excited about Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro” being the President of Somaliland.

I may have to get use to it, but, its not the change for a new generation the country needs.

Allaa Mahad Leh
