Somaliland: Presidential Palace rebuffs Farmaajo’s calls for unity

Date:

Hussein Adan Igeh, Spokesman of Somaliland’s Presidential Palaces, on Sunday shot down calls for unity made by Somalia’s President in an interview with Saab TV.

Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo pledged to reunite Somalia and Somaliland during a speech marking his country’s independence day on Sunday.

Igeh highlighted Somaliland’s 26 years success without Somalia and questioned the irrational logic behind Farmaajo’s statements.

“Somaliland has succeeded at becoming a peaceful fully-functioning state that has democratically-elected governments that provide for its citizens,” Igeh said.

“How can a President who cannot even unite Mogadishu – unite Somalia with Somaliland?,”

He added: “He should focus on uniting Mogadishu’s neighborhoods and stop making claims to Somaliland,”. “He should get his priorities in order,”.

Igeh says Somaliland will never discuss unity with Somalia if peace talks between the two countries start again.

“If peace talks recommence, Somaliland recognition will be the only discussion on the table”.
