Somaliland: Expedite The Recently-innovated Somaliland Curriculum, MoE Urges Privately Owned Schools

Somaliland government has finally produced syllabus textbooks for primary and secondary schools. The minister reiterated that his ministry will no longer tolerate 3-year-secondary schools and will close it sooner rather than later.

Despite the commencement of a new curriculum in Somaliland, yet some privately owned schools are reluctant from the decrees released by the Ministry of Education and Higher Studies pertaining the practice of the new curriculum which is intended to be addressed through the medium of Somali language at primary schools.

Intimidating the law-breakers, the Education Minister Hon Abdillahi Ibrahim Habbane met committee representing the nationwide private schools. In the closed-door meeting, the two sides avowed that all the decrees issued by the Education Ministry be implemented.

Earlier this year, the Minister of Education, Hon. Abdillahi Ibrahim Habbane issued a ministerial decree which states:

  1. Somali language will be medium of teaching at all primary schools
  2. The newly introduced curriculum will be followed

Furthermore, the committee lauded the education minister for developing the education, improving the curriculum and hosting sessions with private schools. In addition, the committee promised teaching the outline and specification of Somaliland. They stated that through the existence of circumstances, they would obey the order of the incumbent MoE Hon. Abdillahi Dhere. They also promised that they will enhance mother tongue, Somali.

In his remarks, the current minister for Education and Higher Studies Abdillahi Ibrahim Habbane stated that his govt has finally produced syllabus textbooks for Somaliland primary and secondary schools. The minister reiterated that his ministery will no longer tolerate 3-year-secondary schools and will close it sooner rather than later.

The two sides also agreed to commence the process of teaching all subjects in Somali from KG and grade one. The other classes will continue their system.

Speaking at the venue, the chairman SLNECB Daud Ahmed Farah also assured his office will not give any certification or testimonial document to any 3-year-secondary school.
