Residents in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region said al-Shabab militants attacked an African Union force base early Tuesday.
There was no immediate information about casualties in the attack in the town of Jannaale, located about 120 kilometers south of the capital, Mogadishu.
The residents said militants using a car bomb and portable rocket launchers came at the base from multiple directions and entered the facility.
In June, al-Shabab attacked another AMISOM base in the same region, killing more than 50 soldiers from Burundi.
AMISOM forces and Somali troops have recaptured areas of Somalia from the al-Qaida-linked militants in recent years, but attacks have persisted.
