His Excellency the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud “Silanyo”, today, received the new Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr Peter de Clercq at his office.
At the end of an intensive meeting the two sides had at the Presidency, presided by His Excellency the President, H.E. Mohamed Behi Yonis and Mr. Clerck summed it up for the press.
The Minister said the two sides talked at length of the dependable peace and stability of the Republic of Somaliland which is conducive to international intervention on humanitarian and development programs in Somaliland, the drought that is presently threatening the lives of people and livestock in a number of regions of Somaliland, the on-going preparations for a democratically fair and free environment for the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections and the status of talks among the three national parties on probable dates for the elections.
Mr. Clerck, also speaking at the podium, said that he was happy to be here on this visit and that they had had fruitful discussions on various issues of mutual concern with the leadership of Somaliland, adding that the refugees fleeing from war-ravaged Yemen was an issue ton which the UN was working closely with the government of Somaliland.
He said the programs the UN was carrying out in Somaliland were not confined to Hargeisa alone but that they covered other parts, regions of the country.
“The refugees arriving in Somaliland – Yemenis, Ethiopians, Somalians – is a big issue on which we are cooperating with the government,” he said adding that the UN was fully cognizant of the ramifications of the issue, and that they will spare no effort in helping out on this and other outstanding issues such as that of the drought.
