Somaliland: First National teachers’ training Institute (NTTI) Inducted

The first National teachers’ training Institute was opened on Saturday at the Macariff institute with the collaboration of Somaliland Ministry of Education, Care International and mercy corps.

H.E Vice President Abdurrahman Abdullah Ismael speaking during the opening ceremony of the National teachers’ training Institute (NTTI) said, “I hope this in service teachers training institute will offer a great deal of benefits, such as the ability to earn teacher education certification, improve their general teaching skills and learn ways to better motivate students but most of all to improve education in the country.

Mr. Buuni, the Director of the government teachers’ training Institute speaking during the opening ceremony informed the audience that the education department has started a programme to give the trainings to teachers from all regions of Somaliland to that they can teach students in a better way.

The Director of the government teachers’ training Institute claimed that recruitments of teachers were being done only on merit basis through the National Testing Service and not a single teacher will be recruited without merit.

Ms. Khadra Yusuf, Care international representative speaking at the function said, “I would like to use this opportunity to thank Somaliland Ministry of Education and higher learning, USAID, Mercy Corps for their support towards this SYLI project, we are not gathered here today for inauguration ceremony the first government teachers’ training institute and but also this is the first time we have managed to bring together 325 teachers from all corners of the country here in Hargeisa for training.

Ms. Sacdiya , Mercy corps representative , also speaking at the event said, “The Somali Youth Leaders Initiative (SYLI) which a five-year USAID funded program whose overall goal is to increase education, economic and civic participation opportunities for Somali youth to reduce instability in target areas.

Since inception in 2011, 22 schools being built in Somaliland, we have also trained 364 teachers including 40 female teachers and we have plans to train 898 additional teachers.

Prof. Farah Elmi Geedole , Minister of Education and higher learning speaking during the opening ceremony of the first National teachers’ training Institute said, “I glad today to see the opening of the country’s teachers training institute , I hope the new teachers’ training institute will take initiatives to offer training programmes to Somaliland secondary teachers from all regions through appropriate modes and develop curricula.

“The current government is committed to improve the quality of teachers’ education and standard of basic education here in Somaliland and providing the best learning and work environment for the future teachers,” adding the new center will serve our purpose for developing strong educational institutions “, He said.

Also among the notable speakers at the opening ceremony were Dr. Abdi Aw Dahir, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Hon Ali Gabiley , Member of Parliament.

About Somali Youth Leaders Initiative (SYLI)

Somali Youth Leaders Initiative (SYLI) is a five-year USAID funded program whose overall goal is to increase education, economic and civic participation opportunities for Somali youth to reduce instability in target areas. The project will address these issues by engaging youth in the region with training and guidance to identify appropriate and sustainable employment opportunities. The project will work with existing administration and build the capacities of the existing institutions and networks to sustain the services that the SYLI will provide. The program will also support the overall goal of increasing the region’s stability through targeted interventions that foster economic recovery and improve the livelihoods. It seeks to achieve three results: (1) Fair and equitable secondary education services improved for at least 50,000 Somali youth, community members and education officials; (2) at least 15,000 youth are more economically self-reliant with supportive systems; and (3) 100,000 youth empowered to particpate and contribute positively and productively to society.
