Somalia: Government passes new policy to restrict employment of ‘foreign workers’

Date:

Somalia’s federal government has said that it will restrict the reliance on foreign labour in a bid to encourage local workforce and create opportunities for the youth.

In a high-level ministerial meeting held in Mogadishu on Thursday, the government introduced new policies that will be used upon foreign labour recruitment and was unanimously passed by the cabinet.

‘’ Foreigners cannot take jobs which local are willing to do,’’ read a statement from the Office of Somalia Prime minister.

It further stated that foreigners must obtain first permit work visas before entering the country.

According to government officials, complaints about the influx of aliens in the local job market had shown that locals were losing out in job openings in foreign firms.

Since the collapse of the Central government in 1991, many companies, education institutions and International & local organizations in the region rely on foreign workers to meet their manpower needs.
