Somaliland: Taiwan Technical Mission Opens in Hargeisa

THT: Taiwan and Somaliland have launched formal  bilateral cooperation in healthcare, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and agriculture.

The official opening of the Taiwan Technical Mission to Somaliland in Hargeisa was made possible after Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and his Somaliland counterpart Prof Faraton signed a Technical Cooperation Framework Agreement on behalf of the two governments on Aug. 17, when Taiwan opened its representative office in the country.

The launch was officiated by by Taiwan’s top representative to Somaliland Allen Lou (羅震華) and Somaliland’s deputy cum acting minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Liban Yusuf Osman.

In the Technical Framework the two countries shall coperate in the fields of Health, Agriculture and Information Techonoly and communication.

In the health sector the Technical Mission shall support Maternal and Infant Health Care Improvement in collaboration with  Ministry of Health Development.

In Agriculture the Taiwanese mission shall implement a project to help  Improve Vegetable and Fruits Production  Quality in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture Development.

The ICT project shall see the Technical Mission enhance the  e-Government Capability in Somaliland,” in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Technology.

Speaking during the ceremony, Lou said Taiwan will continue to share its expertise to help Somaliland improve its healthcare and medical capabilities and benefit Somaliland citizens.

According to minister Liban Yusuf “the successful Tiawan model of economic development can be replicated in somaliland to transform the country into regional economic powerhouse”.

Taiwan Signs Agreement To Improve Healthcare, Agriculture And ICT In Somaliland

In February, Taiwan and Somaliland signed an agreement to establish reciprocal representative offices. Taipei opened its office in Somaliland on Aug. 17, while Somaliland opened its office in Taipei on Sept. 9.
