Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has travelled to Adado to attend the inauguration of Galmudug regional President Ahmed Du’ale Geele Haaf.
The normally restive town of Adado – the interim capital of Galmudug- is awash with security agents and soldiers who are on heightened alert for the duration of the event. Residents say that there are new checkpoints and road closures erected in the city.
Puntland President Abdiwali Gaas will be attending the inauguration ceremony for Mr. Haaf. Puntland and Galmudug have historically experienced hostility towards one another that has led to open fighting between to the regional militias over border disputes. Many hope that Mr. Haaf can work with his counterpart in Puntland to ensure a lasting peace between the two regions
President Haaf, a business tycoon with major interests in khat and banana’s was most recently a federal Member of Parliament. He was elected as the regional president of Galmudug on May 3 by state MP’s following the surprise resignation of Abdikarim Hussein Guled in last February over health issues.
