Two siblings were killed on Saturday evening after a landmine exploded in Southern Somalia, according to local witnesses.
The brother and sister were travelling on a bajaaj (auto rickshaw) when the vehicle hit a landmine near the Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle.
The Information Minister for Hirshabelle, Mahad Hassan has said that Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union (AU) troops were deployed to the area after the explosion to conduct investigations. He added that two separate bombs nearby were defused.
Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, the militant insurgency group Al-Shabaab is widely believed to be behind the attack.
The roads in South and Central Somalia are littered with landmines that occasionally detonate causing death and injury to the residents who live in the area.
