The Vice president of the Republic of Somaliland Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail ‘Sayli’ has expressed that his government shall establish special police unit against illegal immigration of Somaliland’s youth to European countries so as to reduce the death of youth in the Mediterranean Sea.
Nearly 380 African and Asian illegal migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean waters after their boat sank between Egypt and Greece where only 23 were rescued in this accident.
At least more than 100 Somaliland citizens were among the deceased and the incident brought about a public outcry grievances’ from the ordinary people in Somaliland.
VP Sayli stated this during his exclusive interview with BBC Somali service on Wednesday in which he also denied that his government failed to raise the job opportunities to the teenagers.
“We were shocked when we heard the death of huge number of our youth. It’s heart rendering really. We also sent condolence to the families, relatives and friends of those who lost their lives in the sea tragedy.”
The Vice president insisted that “illegal immigration is an international issue and many other African countries are also facing same problem” adding that “My government shall take urgent steps concerning these matters.”
He added “we shall establish special police unit against the illegal immigration and shall jail those who works in trafficking of the youth.”
Somaliland’s Vice president had called on to deal this matter to national dialogue. “My government had done whatever it could. We raised the quantity of Somaliland’s civil servants and reached 16 thousands out of the 9000 when we came on the power 2010.”
