Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) press statement regarding Somalia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) on Somalia, consisting of EU member states, the EU, Norway, Switzerland and the United States appreciates the active participation of the Federal Government of Somalia in the second cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process which took place during the 24th session of the UN Human Rights Council on 22 January 2016.

The Minister of Women and Human Rights Development met with the HRWG on 8 February to discuss the UPR and follow-up. Of the total of 228 recommendations the Somali delegation accepted 107 recommendations and the HRWG welcomes the Minister’s approach to engage all relevant Somali stakeholders in order to build consensus and provide a coherent position on the remaining 121 recommendations before the 32nd Regular Session of the Human Rights Council in June.

The HRWG highly appreciates the continuous open dialogue with the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development and supports the Ministry in its promotion and protection of human rights in Somalia.
