African Union peacekeepers in Somalia are searching for dozens of soldiers missing after one of their bases in Southern Somalia was attacked by al-Shabaab militants.
A military source has told Horseed Media that more than 60-troops were missing following the attack in Janale town, which is about 90km southeast of Mogadishu.
‘’Four helicopters are part of the searching operation and are assisted by ground troops. Every effort to find them is being made,’’ said the sources who requested to be anonymous.
A number of soldiers who escaped after the attack were found yesterday evening in the outskirts of the town.
Meanwhile, the French news agency AFP reported that at least 50 Ugandan soldiers of the African Union forces were killed in the attack. The news agency claimed that it had seen a ‘’briefing note sent to diplomats by Western military officials’’.
Although the extremist group al-Shabab was ousted from its bases in Mogadishu in 2011, militants continue to stage lethal attacks across the seaside city and other towns.
