Somalia: President promise more inclusive voting process in 2016

Date:

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has said his government will be holding free and fair election hinting more inclusive voting process than in 2012 election.

In 2012 election, Somalia members of Parliament were chosen by elders from their tribes and the nominated MPs elected the President.

The President scoffed the rumors that his government is planning to extend office saying he has no intention for extension.

“One thing I can assure, there will be no extension “, said the President.

Early this week, UN special envoy to Somalia Nicolas Key hinted that there is possibility to expand the number of choosing the President but said is up to the Somalia people to decide.

Some experts warned the delaying of writing the new Constitution and registering voters may overshadow the goal of holding one man one vote in the country in 2016.
