UNCTAD Secretary General certifies port managers in Djibouti

Mukhisa Kituyi, UNCTAD’s Secretary-General, together with the Director General of Port de Djibouti SA, Mr. Saad Omar Guelleh, Mr. Youssouf Moussa Dawaleh, President of the Djiboutian Chamber of Commerce and Mr. Aboubaker Omar Hadi, President of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, awarded the 18 successful candidates with the UNCTAD Certificate of Modern Port Management. The event was widely featured in the local media.

Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi thanked the Port of Djibouti for its local organization of the training and commended the graduates for their commitment and perseverance in participating in 240 hours of training outside of their normal working hours.

He remarked that a port can only be as efficient as the people that work in it, making the case for the continuation of this capacity building programme in the port community of Djibouti.

From 15 to16 February, the participants of the French-speaking network of TrainForTrade/UNCTAD’s Port Training Programme in Djibouti had defended their final dissertations in front of an international jury at the training center of the Port of Djibouti.

The candidates of this second training cycle were senior- and mid-level staff members from the port community of (Port de Djibouti SA, Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, Doraleh Container Terminal SA, Association des Transitaires Djiboutiens, SDTV Bulk Terminal and Simme Transit).

Port managersTopics covered included alternative energy sources, infrastructure development, the creation of an online platform for port management, and the situation of dock workers in the port.

The jury comprised representatives from the partner ports of the French-speaking network of the Programme, namely the Ports of Abidjan, Cotonou, Lomé and Marseille, as well as from the UNCTAD/TrainForTrade team.

The programme is financed entirely by the member port communities. It also receives support from the Port of Marseille-Fos and Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port, France.
