Somaliland: Two Gov’t Ministers in Turkey for Somalia-Somaliland Talks Resumption

Two government ministers flew from Egal International airport yesterday without the full knowledge of the media in Somaliland.

Somaliland foreign minister, Dr. Sa’ad Ali Shire and Minister for Presidency, Mohamoud Hashi Abdi left for Turkey to meet with Somalia Federal Ministers in order to jump start the stalled dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland.

The talks which Turkey brokered and hosted most of the rounds embarks on diplomatic leverage to push for the resumption of the collapsed talks between the two sides.

The last round of the talks stopped after members hailing from Somaliland were sent to the talks by Somalia authority which Somaliland perceived as an excuse to pave the way for the political stand-off when it comes to the talks.

Turkey has stated its instance and said loud and clear that it wants the greater unity of Somalia in the long or short term.

Somaliland government officials have that in mind but meet with foreign delegations behind the curtain and hide the facts from the citizens who are yearning to know what is on stake.

The bone of contention is that Somaliland is determined to secede from Somalia while the SFG claims that SL should remain the confederation.

SL with a population of 3 million is desperate to break away from Somalia due to the past crimes against humanity perpetrated by the junta leader, Said Bare who deceased after he was ousted from power by popular militia revolt.

Somaliland escaped much of the unrest and chaos experienced by the South of Somalia ever since it announced its secession in 1991.

Although it has not been recognized but functions as a state within a failed state.
